Susan Davis, Chair

Susan-headshotSusan and her husband Tim have lived in the Westshore, where Tim serves as pastor of Westside Bible Church, since November of 1996. They have 3 grown children and are enjoying these new days of being empty-nesters.

Refugee Sponsorship Involvement

In June of 2012, Susan accepted a position on the Western Region Council & National Board of the Associated Gospel Churches (AGC) where she serves as Regional Representative. In the Spring of 2015, at the AGC National Board meeting, and again at the Regional Conference, the need for the AGC to be involved in the unfolding refugee crisis became clear, and both Tim and Susan felt the call from God to be involved in some capacity with this new venture. By September of 2015, they had officially accepted the position of co-directors of the AGC Refugee Sponsorship Initiative.

The first order of business was to apply to become a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) and to learn the Canadian process of private sponsorship. The SAH application was ready to send off in November, and in early December Tim, with his ministerial colleagues, arranged a meeting to gauge interest in our community of churches to sponsor a refugee family. Susan presented the initial information and requirements for a sponsorship committee and fielded questions. The group met for a second time in early January, and a sponsorship committee was formed.

That committee capably and quickly made some good progress drawing in more people to help, raising funds, and collecting & organizing goods for a family. Tim and Susan provided resources and guidance from RSTP, IRCC and the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) Justice and Compassion (our SAH while our application was processed) to support this committee in the early days of preparation.

In early May of 2016 the AGC received word that their application was not accepted; they needed more experience as an organization. The C&MA has spoken on their behalf to appeal the decision, but in the mean time they are moving forward with the express purpose of gaining more experience.

Adding Experience and Gaining Expertise

Having been involved from the beginning, Susan is glad for the opportunity to accept the position of Chairperson of the Westshore Refugee Sponsorship Group’s Committee, and to continue working alongside its capable Committee members and larger group of volunteers to sponsor a refugee family with the long-standing experience of the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia as our SAH.
